UNIV 100 Faculty Members
UNIV 100 faculty play a crucial role in helping first-year students succeed at George Mason University in regards to both their academic and social transition.
Below you will find the general expectations of the faculty role (not an exhaustive list).
Faculty Teaching Expectations
- Serve as the main instructor for University 100 with a peer advisor (PA -undergraduate student who serves as the junior instructor); attend all classes
- Prepare syllabus and lesson plans (in collaboration with peer advisor)
- Faculty will abide by the terms of the PA-Faculty Agreement.
- Address specific student concerns in and out of class (via e-mails, phone calls, meetings).
- Serve as a resource for transition to George Mason for students in your class.
- Serve as a liaison between University Studies, Peer Advisor, and students by sharing communication or events pertinent for the students.
Faculty Administrative Tasks
- Meet all deadlines, such as grading, provided by University Studies.
- Read all communication from University Studies (i.e. newsletters, emails, etc.) and act on actionable items in a timely manner.
- Attend all University Studies faculty meetings.
- Complete all feedback forms and surveys provided by University Studies staff.
Faculty/PA Relationship Expectations
- Foster a collaborative relationship with peer advisor through regular meetings, goal setting, feedback and modeling teaching techniques as guided by the PA Program learning outcomes (will be provided).
- Provide University Studies with a formal, written mid-semester PA evaluation.
- Communicate as needed with University Studies staff regarding PA performance.
- Support and encourage PA professional development.
Faculty Eligibility Requirements
- Must have a master’s or doctoral degree OR have at least 18 graduate-level credits and actively pursuing the degree.
- You must have approval from your current Mason supervisor.
- Non-teaching, full-time George Mason employees can only teach up to 3 credits during a semester at Mason.
- Wage employees and graduate students must comply with the 1450 hours rule.
- Classified non-exempt employees are ineligible to teach.
- As per HR, UNIV faculty members who leave their full-time Mason position are not eligible to continue to teach UNIV 100, effective immediately.
Faculty Time Commitment and Compensation
- Time commitment for Fall semester includes approximately 5 hours per week (including 1 hour and 15 mins of class time, 1 hour meeting with peer advisor, 1 hour of planning and grading, and 1 hour monthly faculty meeting).
- All new faculty must attend two training sessions held in the spring prior to teaching their first semester.
- Faculty will be paid on a bi-monthly basis over the course of each teaching semester. Total pay for the semester is $1400 for faculty in their first through third year of service, and $1650 for faculty teaching their fourth year and above with University Studies.
