What is a Peer Advisor?
Peer Advisors are undergrad students that partner with a faculty member to teach a UNIV 100- ‘Introduction to Mason’ course as a junior instructor! Help first-year students get adjusted to Mason while earning valuable experience in a paid position. As an instructor, mentor, leader, and advocate – Peer Advisors (PA) will help students successfully reach personal goals to have the best college experience possible.
Are you eligible to be a Peer Advisor?
- Be an undergraduate student enrolled at George Mason University during the upcoming Fall semester.
- Maintain a 2.5 cumulative & semester GPA.
- Remain in good standing in relation to the Code of Student Conduct at George Mason University
- Attend a virtual or in-person 30 min information session (instructions for registration below).
- Complete an application.
- Submit one reference (coworker, supervisor, instructor/professor, inside or outside of George Mason that is familiar with your work ethic.)
- Cannot work more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment combine (PA is 5 hours per week). Resident Advisors (RAs) are not eligible.

Peer Advisor Teaching Expectations
- Co-teach UNIV 100 “Introduction to George Mason” with a Faculty member as a junior instructor; attend all class section meetings.
- Meet regularly with Faculty in person or virtually and maintain prompt communication throughout the semester.
- Carry out all tasks in regard to teaching UNIV 100 class as assigned by faculty member, e.g. lesson planning, preparing classroom materials, facilitating team-building/icebreakers.
- Assist Faculty with administrative tasks as determined, e.g., arranging for class speakers, grading, tracking attendance, etc.
- Address specific student concerns, in and out of class (e-mails, phone, meetings).
- Meet 1:1 with students once per semester outside of the class time.
- Serve as a role model to new students; mentor new students.
- Serve as a liaison between University Studies, Faculty, and students.
- Provide information about campus services & involvement opportunities to students.
Peer Advisor Other Expectations
- Attend biweekly small team meetings led by Senior Peer Advisors.
- Attend monthly PA staff meetings, including PA kick-off event the Sunday before classes begin in August. Other meetings scheduled for Tuesdays at 5:00-6:40pm.
- Attend one individual meeting with the University Studies supervisor.
- Maintain prompt communication with Senior Peer Advisor and University Studies staff.
- Read the PA Pause weekly newsletter and respond when needed.
- Plan and attend PA-sponsored programs.
- Attend at least three program events in the Fall semester (events will be communicated by University Studies team and include admissions events, PA recruitment, and other student success events).
- PAs will be observed and evaluated by a Senior Peer Advisor (SPA) or University Studies staff.
- Attend the PA Spring Retreat on March 21, 2026
Peer Advisor Training Requirements
- University 330: Peer Leadership (PAs) – 0/1 credit course in Spring 2026 semester – February 13th – May 4th, Fridays, 10:30 AM-1:10 PM. (University Studies staff will manually enroll applicants that accept the position and meet all eligibility requirements)
Compensation & Time Commitment
- Peer Advisors will receive a stipend of $1,250 for the Fall 2026 semester. The funds will be divided into 7 payments paid biweekly over the Fall semester.
- Time commitment includes approximately 5 hours per week including 1 hour and 15 mins of class time, 1 hour meeting with faculty, and 1 hour of planning and grading plus bi-weekly small team meetings, and monthly large team meetings.
